What is Whey Protein?

Whey is one of two proteins found in milk. Whey itself is actually a byproduct of the cheese-making process. As cow milk is turned into cheese, liquid whey is left behind.

Whey is packed with protein and is an excellent source of branched chain amino acids (or BCAAs). In fact, whey contains more BCAAs than any other known food source.

What’s So Great About Whey Protein?

Whey protein is such a great option for bodybuilders because it contains the perfect balance of amino acids necessary for muscle building and recovery. Whey protein is not only an excellent source of nutrition, but it helps athletes increase size, strength and speed in their sports.

Whey also provides a significant boost to the immune system as it is a powerful antioxidant. Regularly taking whey protein supplements can strengthen the body’s overall resistance to illness and infection.

Finally, whey protein is ingested rapidly into the system. It provides a huge boost of protein and gets it right to where it’s needed. This is a great post-workout, as the muscles need that protein boost to repair and rebuild.

What About Other Forms of Protein?

While other forms of protein do make up the majority of a bodybuilder’s diet, whey is an important supplement due to its biological value. Biological value (or BV) measures how efficiently a protein can be absorbed and utilized in the body.

For example, beef sits at around 75 on the BV scale. Eggs are out ahead of most other proteins at 100. Whey protein, however, leads the pack with a BV number of around 170!

Does Whey Protein Cause Side Effects?

Unless you’re allergic to dairy, whey protein is pretty safe to take. Of course, not all products are created equal (as we’ll discuss below), so do your research and be sure to follow the product’s instructions carefully.

Choosing the Right Whey Protein Supplements

As noted, not all whey protein products are the same – in quality or in price. First, it helps to understand the three types of whey protein on the market:

– Whey protein isolate is the purest form of whey protein (and the priciest).

– Whey protein concentrate is less pure and contains more fat.

– Whey protein blends are also available, and are a mixture of isolate and concentrate.

If you can afford isolate, it’s certainly the better option. Isolate is all the good without the fat, the carbohydrates, and the lactose, which means you’re getting the most out of each serving.

A Note on Dosing

As with any supplement, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Too much protein can be harmful to the kidneys, so dose carefully and drink plenty of water to help your body properly metabolize the proteins.
